In musical performance there are individuals that usually fit into one of three categories, musicians, singers, and entertainers. Occasionally one will find a combination of the two. On that rare occasion one will find a combination of the three. Randall Key is unequivocally one of those rare instances where all three dimensions are experienced. He has been described as a “jack of all trades”, and called “music’s renaissance man”, but Randall will be the first to disregard those assertions. Whether it is playing a smooth ride on the trumpet, driving a solid groove on a set of drums, playing the fiddle, or crooning a ballad, Randall is comfortable in all aspects. His proficiency in over fourteen instruments and knowledge of musical styles disregards limitations set forth by music purists. It does not matter if he performs Haydn or Haggard one thing is for certain, this “musician’s musician” possesses an intense passion for music.

Currently Randall serves as the conductor of the Hartselle High School Band. Prior to working at Hartselle he directed band and choir at Cullman High School and taught jazz improvisation at Troy State College and Wallace State College. Randall attended Wallace State College receiving his Associates of Arts, The University of Montevallo receiving a Bachelors of Music Education, and The University of North Alabama earning a Masters of Arts degree. Randall performs throughout the Southeast with the band Soul Society and as a freelance musician. If that is not enough he is a clinician, studio musician, composer/arranger and band adjudicator. He has performed with Allman Brothers guitarist Dickie Betts, actor Danny Glover, screenwriter Felix Justice, Motown entertainer, Percy Sledge, Rockabilly sensation Big Sandy and the Fly Rite Boys, jazz trumpeter Bobby Shew, “Artist of the Decade”, Alabama and currently performs with Jeff Cook and the AGB. Some of his professional affiliations and honors include, Who’s Who of American Jr. Colleges, Past President of the Alabama International Association of Jazz Educators, Board of Directors for the Alabama School of Gospel Music, Contributing author in Teaching Music through Performance in Jazz, Who’s Who of American High School Teachers, Outstanding Alumni for Wallace State College, and Who’s Who in America.
